Professor Liu Zuguo, born in 1981, is fromLinqingxian, Shandong Province. He currently holds the rank of Associate Professor in the School of Literature of Shandong University, and also serves as Thesis Advisor for MA students. Furthermore, he has been selected to be a member of Shandong University’s Plan For the Future with Young Scholars. In 2009, he graduated from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of East China Normal University with a Ph.D. in Literature, and joined the faculty of Shandong University in July of the same year. In 2011, he completed postdoctoral research at the Postdoctoral Station for Chinese Language and Literature at Shandong University.
Professor Liu’s research work is primarily in the areas of the History of the Chinese Language, Textual Criticism and the Study of the Meaning of Words and Terms in Ancient Chinese Literature and Writing, the Handling and Organizing of Documents Related to the Religion of Daoism and Research in the Language of Daoist Religious Texts and Scriptures. He has published more than sixty papers and articles in Chinese academic journals as well as in scholarly publications overseas, including: Jianghai Academic Journal, Research in Religious Studies, The People’s University’s Reprints of Newspaper and Periodical Materials, Collected Papers in the Study of the History of the Chinese Language, Studies of Ancient and Classical Documents, Studies of Ancient Books, The Linguistics of Documents, Library Theory and Practice, The Daoist Religion in China, The Sinological Research Newsletter (Taiwan), Hongdao (Hong Kong), and The Macao Journal of Literature and Information Science (Aomen [Macao]).
At present, Professor Liu is supervising a number of research projects, including:
· “The Excavation and the Study of Materials in Textual Criticism and Research on the Meanings of Terms and Words in Ancient Scriptures of the Daoist Religion”, a research project sponsored by the National Foundation for the Social Sciences
· One of the sub-projects in “A Comprehensive Compilation of Documents and Literature in the Study of Ancient Chinese Dialects and Dialectology”, a Major National Social Sciences Research Project
· “A Study of the Vocabulary and Glossary in the Documents and Scriptures of the Religion of Daoism in the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties Period”, a Shandong Province Social Sciences Planning Project
· “The New Edition of ‘The Comprehensive Dictionary of the Religion of Daoism’ and the Construction of the Language Sciences Database of Documents of the Daoist Religion”, a major research project under the auspices of the School of Literature, Shandong University
· “The Collection, Organization, and Research of Daoist Religious Texts and Books”, a sub-project in “The Collection, Organization, and Research of Documents of the Social History of Religions”, a research project being undertaken by the Shandong University Youth Team in the Humanities and the Social Sciences
Professor Liu also participated, among other things, in “The Literature of Ancient Dialects Collected Publications” project, under the auspices of the National Plan for the Organization and Publication of Ancient Chinese Books, Texts and Documents.
Furthermore, in recent years, Professor Liu has supervised and completed a number of other significant research projects, including:
· “A Study of the Glossary and Vocabulary in the Daoist Scriptures of the Wei,Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties Period”, a Ministry of Education Humanities and the Social Sciences Research Youth Foundation Research Project
· “A Study of the Glossary and Vocabulary in the Ancient Daoist Scriptures from theEasternJin through the Southern and Northern Dynasties Period”,a research project sponsored by the Independent Innovation Fund of Shandong University (in the New Talent Recruitment and Development category)
· “A Study of the Glossary and Vocabulary of Taiping jing [Scripture of Universal Peace]”,a research project sponsored by the Independent Innovation Fund of Shandong University (in the Humanities and Social Sciences category)
· “A Study of the Glossary and Vocabulary in the Ancient Daoist Scriptures from theEasternJin through the Southern and Northern Dynasties Period”, a Shandong Province Post-doctoral Innovation project.
Professor Liu has authored and published a monograph, titled A Study of the Glossary and Vocabulary in the Texts and Documents of the Religion of Daoism in the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties Period,(Shandong University Press, 2018). He has also participated in the compilation of The Chinese Language of Ancient Times, (Higher Education Press, 2016) and A DictionaryFor Learners of Classical Chinese, (The People's Education Press, 2012).
