Professor Hou Naifeng,born in 1979, is from Tanchengxian, Linyi Municipality, Shandong Province. He did his baccalaureate studies from 1998 to 2002 in History Education in the College of History and Culture at Central China Normal University. He was admitted by examination to the History Department of Anhui University in 2002 to pursue MA studies in the field of Historical Document Studies, concentrating in the area of Research and Handling of Excavated Ancient Documents, with Mr. Liu Xinfang as his primary teacher and Thesis Advisor. At the same time, he was tutored, in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Anhui University, by Mr. He Linyi and Mr. Xu Zaiguo, in the field of Ancient Philology. In 2004 he was admitted, with scholarship aid, by early enrollment under the MA-Ph.D Continuous-Study Program, to doctoral studies in the History Department of Anhui University, from which he subsequently obtained his Ph.D. degree, in 2007. In July 2007, he joined the staff of the Institute of Confucian Culture at Qufu Normal University (which subsequently merged with the School of History and Culture to form what is now the new School of History and Culture at Qufu Normal University.) Dr. Hou was on the staff there until December 2018. In the meantime, however, Dr. Hou also conducted postdoctoral research from 2010 to 2012at Fudan University's Research Centerfor the Study of Excavated Documents and Ancient Texts, with Mr.QiuXigui serving as his collaborative mentor/advisor. In January 2019, Dr. Hou transferred to the faculty of the School of Literature at Shandong University.
Professor Hou’s primary fields of research are: Philological Studies of Excavated Documents (focusing mainly on bamboo scripts and inscriptions and textile documents from the Warring States Period and the Qin and Han dynasties), and Ancient Philology (including oracle bones scripts, bronze inscriptions, and writings from the Warring States era), as well as the study of texts and documents from the pre-Qin era through the Qin and Han dynastic periods that have been passed on in written and oral traditions through the ages (focusing on Confucian texts and documents.)
Professor Hou has authored and published two monographs:
· Collected Editorial Annotations and Interpretations of the Written Texts Related to Zhouyi [The Zhou Classic of Changes], Ancient Books Publishing House, Taiwan, 2009
· An Editorial Treatment of the Chu-region Bamboo Inscription Texts Identified with the Confucian School from the Excavation at Shangbo, Ancient Books Publishing House, Shanghai, 2018
He has also published more than 50 academic papers and articles in journals and periodicals such as Historical Studies, Studies in Chinese History, Studies in Chinese Literature and History, Archaeology and Cultural Relics, Confucian Studies, Research on theZhou Classic of Change, and Language Science.
Professor Hou has supervised a research project (Grant No. 20110490677) sponsored by General Funding by the Chinese Postdoctoral Science Foundation (completed), as well as a research project (Grant No. 14FZS017) sponsored by Latter-Stage Funding by the National Foundation for the Social Sciences (also completed). He is currently supervising and presiding over the research project “Comprehensive Research on the Ancient Historical Commentaries and Annotations and the Newer Interpretations of The Analects of Confucius, and the Construction of a Relevant Database construction”, a project that is sponsored by General Funding by the National Foundation for the Social Sciences(Grant No. 18BZS003.) Professor Hou has also participated in a number of research projects supervised by his mentors and colleagues, such as the Key Project sponsored by the National Foundation for the Social Sciences,“Interpretation and Researchof Bamboo-inscriptions and Textile Documents of Poetry and Poetics”, (Grant No. 13AZD034), and the General Project sponsored by the National Foundation for the Social Sciences,"The Compilation and Research of Historical Material Related to Historical Persons and Their Names in Bronze-Inscribed Texts and Scripts From the Shang and Zhou Periods”, (Grant No. 14BZS008).

· In 2017, a Level-2 Prize for Outstanding Achievement inScientific Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences in the Institutions of Higher Education of Shandong Province, conferred by the Shandong Provincial Department of Education for the scholarly article: “Revisiting the Issue of the Chronological Sequencing of the ‘Reigns’ of Three ‘Kings’ of the Shang Era: Bao Ding, Bao Yi and Bao Bing as Presented Previously in the Yin benji(Chronicles of the Yin Dynasty) in Shiji(Historical Record)”
