Professor Du Zexun, a member of the Han nationality, was born on March 27, 1963, and hails from Chen Honglou Village, Binhu Township, Tengzhou City, Shandong Province. In 1981, he graduated from upper middle school at No. 1 Tengzhou Secondary School, and was admitted to the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Shandong University. He graduated, completing his baccalaureate studies, from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Shandong University in 1985, and from the graduate class of Shandong University’s Institute for Research in Ancient Books in 1987. Thereafter he remained at Shandong University and joined the staff of the Institute for Research in Ancient Books. he graduated from the Graduate School of Ancient Books and stayed in the school. Professor Du has been primarily engaged in scholarship, teaching, and research in the fields of studying the cataloguing of ancient books and texts, the various versions and editions of printed or published ancient books, ancient books edition-comparison, verification and criticism, the study of The Four Imperial Repositories of Books and Texts, and the study of documents in or from Shandong province. He is currently a Professor at Shandong University’s Institute of Advanced Research in Confucian Studies, a Dissertation Advisor to Ph.D students, and a Lecturing Chair Professor at Shandong University. The courses Professor Du offers mainly include: “Classical Chinese Document Studies (Philology)”, “Guided Readings in the Essential Texts in the Four Imperial Repositories”, and “A Study of Editions and Catalogues”. In addition to his academic responsibilities at Shandong University, Professor Du has also served as Associate Chief Editor for Miscellaneous Supplementary Additions to theGazetteer of Art and Literature of theDraft History of the Qing Dynasty, a member of the Executive Editorial Committee, and Director of the General Editorial Office, of the Books on the Existing Catalogues of the Complete Library of the Four Imperial Repositories of Books series, and Associate Director of the Editorial and Compilation Bureau of A Compendium of Documents in Shandong. He has authored and published several monographs, including: Annotated Existing Catalogues of the Complete Library of the Four Imperial Repositories of Books, Essentials of the Study of Documents (Philology): An Introduction to the Field and Miscellaneous Collected Notes and Drafts from the Hall of Weihu. Professor Du is also chief editor for A Complete Catalogue of the Writings of Qing-Dynasty Scholarsand A Gazette of Books on the History of the Qing Dynasty. In addition, he has authored and published more than two hundred academic papers and articles. In 2012, Professor Du began to supervise the research project on Combined Editorial Comparisons and Verification of the Annotative and Editorial Traditions of the Thirteen Classics. In 2004, he was selected to be one of the scholars to be supported and sponsored by the Ministry of Education’s Program for Supporting Elite Talent in the New Century. In 2008, he was elected as a member of the Leadership Group of the National Plan for the Organizing and Publishing of Ancient Books. From 2010 to 2012, he served as Vice President of the Institute of Research in Literature, History and Philosophy. From 2012 to 2018, he served as Vice President of the Institute of Advanced Research in Confucian Studies. In 2012, he was selected by the Ministry of Education as a “Distinguished Professor and Changjiang Scholar”. Also in 2012, Professor Du received a special government subsidy allowance from the State Council. In 2014, he was selected as a “Most Celebrated Cultural Scholar and One of the Elite Talents of the ‘Four Groups’” designated by the Central Government Ministry of Propaganda. In 2016, he was selected as a “ ‘Commander of the Troops’ for the National Ten-Thousand-People Plan, in the Area of Philosophy and the Social Sciences”. In 2016, he was awarded the title of being one of “Ten Leaders in the Vanguard of Professorial Ethics Among Institutions of Higher Education in Shandong Province”. Beginning in April 2018, Professor Du served as Dean of the School of Literature of Shandong University.
