Professor Zhang Xuejun, born in January 1954, has a Ph.D degree in Literature. He currently holds the rank of Professor in the School of Literature at Shandong University, and is a Dissertation Advisor for Ph.D students. He is President of the Shandong Provincial Association of Contemporary Literature Studies, a member of the Chinese Writers Association, and a Director of the Chinese Association For Research in Contemporary Literature. In 1978, he was admitted to the Department of Chinese Language and Literature atShandong Normal University. In 1983, he was admitted to the graduate program in the Department ofChinese Language and Literature of Shandong University, working toward an MA degree in the field ofModern Chinese Literature, with a focus on Lu Xun Studies, under the tutelage and mentoring of Mr. Sun Changxi, who was his Thesis Advisor. After graduating in 1986, he stayed on at Shandong University as a member of the teaching staff in the area ofContemporary Chinese Literature. He was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2000, and received his Ph.Din Literature in 2002. In 2004, in the second year of the program, Professor Zhang was acclaimed as a Master Teacher at Shandong University.
Professor Zhang is primarily engaged in the teaching and research of modern and contemporary Chinese literature. He has authored and published a number of scholarly monographs, including: A History of the Various Schools and Branches of Writing in Chinese Contemporary Novels, Lu Xun’s Art of Satire, Ba Jin and Reading, Modernism in Contemporary Chinese Novels, Emotion in Literature, and An Exploration of the Art of Contemporary Chinese Literature. Professor Zhang has also taken part in authoring ten other monographs and has authored and published more than 120 academic articles and reviews in such publications as Literary Review, Wen-Shi-Zhe (A Journal of Literature, History and Philosophy), and Miscellaneous Publications ofStudies in Modern Chinese Literature. He has won more than a dozen prizes and incentive awards for his research endeavors, such as the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Social Sciences in Shandong Province, the Liu Xie Prize for Literary Criticism, the Qilu Literature Award and the Prize for OutstandingAchievement in Researchin Higher Education in Shandong Province. He is currently undertaking the research project "A Study of Narratology in Mo Yan's Novels" sponsored by the National Foundation for the Social Sciences.
