Professor Sun Jilinwas born in Fengxian, Jiangsu Province in 1958. He graduated from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Shandong University in 1983. He now holds the rank of Professor in the School of Literature at Shandong University, and also serves as Director of the Modern Poetry Research Center of Shandong University (Weihai). In addition to his faculty positions, Professor Sun is a Director of the ChineseAssociation for Studies in Contemporary Literature, and an Executive Director of the Shandong Society for Studies in Modern Literature. As a university student earlier, he wrote poetry and participated in the founding of theCloud SailsPoetry Society, together with Han Dong, Yang Zhengguang, Wang Chuanping, and others, which would becomeone of the most important birthplaces of what is known as “Third-Generation Poetry” today.Since remaining at Shandong University to work after he received his baccalaureate degree, Professor Sun has been engaged primarily in teaching and research work in the field of modern and contemporary Chinese literature. His primary research fields are Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, and Modern Poetics. He has authored and published more than a hundred academic papers and articles, including "The Dissolution of Culture: The Significance of Third-Generation Poetry", "Observation of Postmodernist Tendenciesin the Third-Generation Poetry in China", and "The Poetry of the Misty Poets and Modernity". He has also authored and published many monographs, including: On the Poetic Wave of the New Era, (co-authored), Zhu Xiang: A Wandering Life, The Inner Eye: Draft Writings on Modern Poetics, and Uprising and Uproar: From Misty Poetry to the Third Generation.Professor Sun took part in the writing for the textbook, A History of Contemporary Chinese Literature, a unified textbook compiled for colleges and universitiesnationwide organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Education. He has supervised a large number of research and topical projects under the aegis of the Shandong Provincial Foundation for the Social Sciences, as well as the national project “Studies of the Poetics of the Narrative Character in Poetry of the New Era”, and the research project “The Contemporary New Wave in Poetry in China within the Framework of World Literature” sponsored by the Ministry of Education.For his research achievements, Professor Sun has won many awards, such as the Chinese Association for Studies of the New Literature'sYungang Cup for Literature, a Level-2 Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Social Sciences in Shandong Province, and a Shandong Province Liu Xie Prize for Literary Criticism.Last but not least, Professor Sun was, in a related popular vote, named as one of the "Top Ten Most Outstanding Young Poetry Critics inContemporary China".
In the School of Literature, Professor Sun offers, for the most part, the following courses for undergraduate students: “History of Modern Chinese Literature”, “A Study of the Wave of Contemporary Avant-garde Poetryin China”, and “Critique and Appreciation of Modern Poetry”. For graduate students, he offers: “Research in the Various Schools and Branches of Literary Thought in Modern and Contemporary China”, “Topical Research in the New Poetic Wave”, and “Research in Online Literature”.
