Professor Sun Xuetang, a native of Zoupingxian, Shandong Province, graduated from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Nankai University in 2000 with a Ph.D. in Literature. Since then, he has been on the staff and faculty of the Institute of Ancient Chinese Literature Research at the School of Literature, Shandong University. He has been an Associate Professor since 2003, and a Professor since 2009. From September 2013 to August 2014 he was a visiting scholar at the University of Victoria in Canada. His primary research fields are the history of Chinese literary thought, Chinese classical poetics, and the literary works of the Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming dynastic periods. The courses that Professor Sun offers at Shandong University include: “The History of Chinese Literature: The Sui and Tang Dynasties”, “The History of Chinese Literature: The Song and Yuan Dynasties”, and “A Study of Poetry and Poetics in the Ming and Qing Dynasties”. In 2010, Professor Sun was awarded the title of “A Teaching Expert Among Junior Faculty” at Shandong University. He is currently an Organizing Director of the Association for the Study of Literature in the Ming Dynasty, a Member of the Standing Board of Directors of the Shandong Provincial Association for the Study of Classical Literature, a Member of the Academic Committee of the Shandong Calligraphers Association, and a Vice President of the Chinese Association for the Study of Li Qingzhao and Xin Qiji.
Professor Sun has authored and published several scholarly monographs, including:Ming-Dynasty Poetics and The Poems of the Tang Dynasty, and The Concept of Having Reverence For the Past and For Antiquity Fades Away: Wang Shizhen and the Literary Thought of the Sixteenth Century. He has also authored more than sixty papers and articles published in academic journals such as Our Literary Legacy,Studies in Literature and Art,Studies of Theory in Literature and Art, and The Academic Journal of Nankai University. Furthermore, Professor Sun has taken part in editing and compiling many textbooks and sets of teaching materials, such as "History of Chinese Literature" and "The Essentials of Chinese Traditional Literature". He has also completed or undertaken a number of research projects sponsored by the sponsored by the National Foundation for the Social Sciences, including a Junior Scholars Research Projecttitled "A Comprehensive Synthetic Study of Ming-Dynasty Scholarship On Tang-Dynasty Poetry”, the general research project titled "A Study from Multiple Perspectivesof Archaism in Ming-Dynasty Literature", and a sub-project of a Major Research Project, titled "A Study of Literary Thought in the Transitional Period Between the Late-Tang/Five Dynasties Era and the Northern Song Dynasty".
The last two research projects mentioned above constitute and are representative of the primary foci and orientations of Professor Sun’s research interests in recent years.
